The Extreme Trend of Cyber Attacks
Small and mid-sized businesses are targeted too: automated scans look for unpatched websites and weak admin logins. Hackers no longer only target large enterprises but use automated scripts to scan small and medium-sized websites for code vulnerabilities. If an attack succeeds, attackers may encrypt business data and demand a ransom.
Immediate Defense Checklist
If you use WordPress or an older PHP system, please execute the following immediately:
- Patch vulnerabilities: Update all plugins to the latest version. Many vulnerabilities come from disclosed but unupdated third-party plugins. Keeping plugins updated is part of website development and ongoing maintenance.
- 3-2-1 backup strategy: At least 3 backup copies, stored on 2 different media, with 1 in an offsite or offline location.
- Mandatory 2FA: Website backend administrators must enable Two-Factor Authentication.
